Born in Urumqi, capital of north-west China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, in 1982, Bohan Shen spent much of his early years in Xinjiang before moving to Beijing. He grew interest in photography at the lab of School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University in 2003 where he finally received BA in journalism.

In 2004, Bohan was hired as a photo editor for China's Xinhua News Agency. Then he worked in Moscow Bureau of Xinhua News Agency as a staff photojournalist from Nov. 2006 to Mar. 2009. In that period, he covered lots of important events in ex-Soviet Union countries, such as presidential election of Russia, Belarus and Azerbaijan, the political crisis and parliamentary election of Ukraine between 2007 and 2008, Russia-Belarus and Russia-Ukraine dispute on gas, the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008, and so on.

After coming back to China, he's been working as a senior photo editor and a photographer based in Beijing, focusing on China's rapid development and people trapped in the whirlpool of economic growth.

His work has been published on several magazines, such as Vision, ZING, Global City Geography, etc. And he has participated in group exhibitions at China's Dali International Photography Exhibition in August 2009, International Festival of Journalism at Perpignan of France in September 2009 and China's Lishui International Photography Cultural Festival in November 2011.
